Shelmerdine (classical studies, U. of North Carolina-Greensboro) presents a textbook for college level students who do not have time to explore Latin through a true reading method and then still gain exposure to the ancient authors. It is a streamlined text that can be completed in one year even for courses that only meet three days a week, she says, and contains concise explanations and readings that instructors can use as-is, augment, or omit as they see fit. Where needed, she explains elements of English grammar so students have a foundation for learning the Latin equivalents. The second edition, revised mostly in response to student and colleague comments, spreads the material out more evenly, and affords additional time for more complex syntax in the second half.
