Vienkāršoti runājot, vinila plates ir rotējoši diski, ko izmanto mūzikas ierakstu glabāšanai. Šajās analogajās mūzikas atmiņas ierīcēs ir modulētas spirālveida rievas, kas mainās atkarībā no emitētajiem skaņas viļņiem. Sākotnēji vinila plates sauca par fonogrāfijas disku platēm, gramofonu platēm vai vienkārši platēm, un tās tika izgatavotas no sveķiem, ko sauca par šellaku. Tikai aptuveni 20. gadsimta vidū, kad šo ierakstu ražošanai sāka izmantot polivinilhlorīdu (PVC), nosaukums "vinila plates" kļuva populārs. To atskaņošanai un ierakstīšanai izmanto atskaņotājus, ko parasti dēvē par gramofona galdiem, fonogrāfiem vai gramofoniem. Fonogrāfijas ieraksti ir komerciāls mūzikas uzglabāšanas un atskaņošanas veids kopš 19. gadsimta sākuma. Tomēr ap 1991. gadu sāka pieaugt kompaktdisku (CD) popularitāte, un ierakstu tirgus samazinājās, un sāka ražot mazākas to partijas. Tomēr mūsdienās ir vērojama vinila plašu atdzimšana. Vinila plašu popularitāte un pārdošanas apjomi ir ievērojami pieauguši, īpaši mūzikas entuziastu un kolekcionāru vidū. Kopš 2017. gada visā pasaulē darbojas tikai 48 rūpnīcas, tāpēc vinila plates mūsdienās tiek uzskatītas par vērtīgām senlietām.
